Our THOT TODAY!

supreme expert!

Some of us think that because we are good in something, we are expert in everything. There are several descriptions of being that kind of person;

  • Pedant – someone who is overly concerned with minor details or rules, especially in showing off knowledge.

  • Smart aleck (or smarty-pants) – informal, implies sarcasm and arrogance.

  • Know-it-all – already very direct; informal and negative.

  • Didact – someone who teaches or lectures too much, often unsolicited.

Below see what some of the symptoms are;

  • 🧠 Cognitive Symptoms:

    • Believes they’re always right – even when proven wrong, they double down.

    • Resists new information – especially if it challenges their worldview or expertise.

    • Overestimates their expertise – in everything, from rocket science to your lunch order.

    🗣️ Communication Symptoms:

    • Interrupts frequently – can’t wait to drop their superior knowledge.

    • Talks more than they listen – conversations are one-sided lectures.

    • Unsolicited correcting – even on minor or irrelevant points (“Actually, it’s pronounced...”).

    • Name-drops or jargon-bombs – to signal intelligence or mastery.

    • Dominates discussions – especially in group settings, often steering the topic to what they know.

    😑 Social Symptoms:

    • Lacks humility – rarely says “I don’t know” or admits mistakes.

    • Disregards others’ input – or dismisses it with a smug correction.

    • Seeks to impress, not connect – conversations feel like competitions, not exchanges.

    • Gets defensive when challenged – or uses condescension as a defense mechanism.

  • You can be well informed about many subjects but never an expert in all. For example, I am a real good designer, but I cannot write very well, and neither can I last a few night hours as a watchman. The world is full of diverse talents, let's appreciate and respect all regardless of the seemingly little input they seem to be adding to the world.
